Eight Years of Moss and Tree Debris on a Shaded Portland Roof
The roof planes closest to the trees carried thick moss in the shingle courses, loose clumps, needles, leaves, and small woody debris. The wide roof photos show that this was not a few isolated spots. Growth crossed large sections of the asphalt shingles, with especially heavy buildup around the skylight, garage roof, and lower edges.
The homeowner told us the roof had not been cleaned in about eight years. With branches nearly touching parts of the roof and the house surrounded by mature evergreens, fallen material had plenty of time to settle between the shingle tabs and hold moisture against the surface.
