Heavy Moss in the Joints and Black Organic Growth on the Wall

The exposed-aggregate driveway, front walkway, and street-side sidewalk had dark organic buildup across the surface. Moss was especially thick in several control joints and along edges where soil, plants, and shade held moisture. The long brick retaining wall had a dull, dark cast from black algae and other organic growth.

We manually removed the heaviest moss before applying pretreatment across the work area. Once the pretreatment had time to work, we pressure washed the driveway, walkway, sidewalk, and brick wall. A final post-treatment addressed remaining organic residue after the mechanical cleaning.

Why the Mossy Joints Needed Attention Before Surface Cleaning

A detail that mattered here was how the moss followed the driveway's control joints instead of sitting evenly across the open concrete. Some sections formed thick green strips while the surrounding exposed aggregate carried a thinner dark film. We pulled those heavy moss areas by hand first so the pretreatment could contact what remained and the surface cleaner would not simply scatter large clumps across the driveway and nearby sidewalk.

The photos also show how the job moved between different materials. The flat concrete could be cleaned consistently with a surface cleaner, while the vertical brick face required a more controlled pass around mortar joints, planting beds, and the long wall edge.

A Brighter Wall and Cleaner Route From Street to Door

After cleaning, the exposed aggregate looked more even from the garage apron through the driveway and onto the walkway. The sidewalk edge was clearer, and the landscaping-lined path to the front steps no longer carried the same dark surface film.

The brick retaining wall showed the biggest color change. Much of the black algae and organic buildup was gone, allowing the red and light brick tones to show again. Cleaning did not alter the age or natural variation of the masonry, but the wall looked noticeably brighter beside the finished concrete.

This project was in a residential part of Hillsboro near McKay Creek and McKinney Park. Mature trees, planted slopes, and dense garden beds created alternating sun and shade around the driveway and front walk. That pattern helped explain why the heaviest moss collected in joints and along protected edges rather than uniformly across every slab.
